Masterclasses in Innovative Music Education

In the summer school ‘Music, Language, and Community: Masterclasses in Innovative Music Education’, innovative music education projects will be created and run with people of diverse cultural backgrounds. 

How can music education contribute to community work? What are the opportunities and limitations of language in contemporary music education? Together with field experts and fellow future (music) educators, you will experience eleven exciting days dealing with these challenging issues. 

From 5 to 15 Sep 2018

You will participate in masterclasses, workshops, group discussions, and inspiring musical activities. You will work on several locations in and around Leuven, and enjoy the good life Leuven and Belgium have to offer. Participation are granted with 3 ECTS credits.

  • Hands-on observation workshop by Adri de Vugt
  • First round of visits and observations in diverse communities in Leuven
  • Group work on collecting project ideas

Friday, 7 September

Saturday, 8 September

Sunday, 9 September

  • Group visit to Brussels
  • Evening concert in Brussels

Monday, 10 September         

  • Lecture 'Music & language' by Kurt Feyaerts
  • Workshop 'Music & language' by Sien De Smet
  • Second round of visits and observations in diverse communities in Leuven
  • Group work: tuning the project concepts

Tuesday, 11 September

  • Participation study day Sing me in (organised by Koor&Stem with ECA-EC, EAS, LUCA)
  • End of the Summer School: 6 pm

Registration fee

Registration fee is €300, including:

  • Twelve nights including breakfast at a youth hostel in the center of Leuven
  • Eleven lunches and dinners
  • Access and transportation to all extra-curricular activities, including
    • A visit to Brussels
    • A city tour in Leuven
    • A visit to the Stella Artois brewery
  • Participation to ‘Sing Me In’ on the last day of the summer school: workshop day about collective singing activities as catalyst to the integration process of young refugees.

Requirements

Every student in training to become a culture or music educator, is welcome. A professional or academic music training is not required. However, deep interest in music and musical background are necessary conditions.

LUCA School of Arts, Campus Lemmens is located on a hill near the historical center of Leuven, a lively university city and hometown of the biggest brewery in the world.

Come and experience some animated summer nights after a hard day’s work. Furthermore, we will visit Brussels, capital of the EU, which is only 20 km away from Leuven.

The organisation is done by LUCA School of Arts, in cooperation with Rostock University of Music & Drama, Royal Conservatoire The Hague and Malmö Academy of Music.
