Gina Siliquini

"Al mio ritmo" - 8mm short film

I live in Maastricht, sometimes in Berlin and have Italian roots. Where one place falls short, I experience the other as too much.

A continuous desire for more cramps my breathing space and thereby my freedom. Melancholic, romanticising and fantasising.

Like a clown on stage, I entertain another, far away from myself.

Memories of the beach and sea of Villa Rosa where I spent all my summers. As a five-year-old girl in a world full of soft grains of sand and the calmness of the sea. Staring at the sea, I circle my navel with my finger. Every year for six weeks, I surround myself with seagulls and shells.

The journey from Maastricht to Villa Rosa takes two days. Endlessly counting number plates until my eyelids gently begin to twitch and the stripes on the tarmac merge into a long brush stroke.

Wandering, unanswered and uninhabited. Searching for more, rediscovered in myself.

She is always looking for poetic cinematic images.

Her work embodies the poetic. She is not a technical image-maker and, according to her, that is not what creating is all about. She is always looking for the overall picture in a gathering and playful way. For her, creating is a search for poetry, intimacy, security and identity.
