SOLITARIUM: a space vamp's lament

This is a story of a Space Vampire who wanders around the galaxies in a spaceship with no
windows, driven by an insatiable hunger for fresh blood and a lust for connection. However, her existence is overwhelmed by paranoia and an inability to love or be loved. She is extremely used to her personal private space/life and cannot let anyone in, because she is in love with her melancholy. Also since she’s an intergalactic predator, it would undermine her whole vampiric being and status, which depends upon manipulating and taking advantage of others. Any experience of intimacy sets her skin on fire, yet sometimes she falls for some of her targets, but soon enough she's compelled to feed upon them.

Through puppet stop motion, a visual and a literary poem and two-dimensional hand-drawn animation shown in an installation format, this tale explores the abstract contradictions within desire and fear, isolation and longing. Nothing gets resolved. The Space Vampire drifts through galaxies, forever haunted by the flames and the blood that consume her and the void and the objects that surround her.

The day starts at 7 AM, with the sound of a loud alarm attempting to wake Mei up. They’ve always had a hard time getting out of bed. Often sleeping through the sound of their alarm. Luckily for Mei, their cat gets awoken by the sudden noise instead and makes sure to wake them up. These two do everything together; getting dressed, eating breakfast, and most important of all… They head up to the roof of their apartment to look out at the sunrise together. It’s a moment of peace, wishing it would last forever.

Unfortunately for Mei, it does not. Time seems to move slower with the apartment empty. However, the routine goes on. Alone. Getting dressed, eating breakfast, and watching the sunrise on the roof of their apartment. It was going to be a day like any other. But something’s blocking the view. A giant ice cube.

Aaliyah Nyanguile
FW

“FW” delves into the realm of digital fashion, exploring the complex relationship between technology and our perception of reality. As society continues to advance into a digital era, the disconnect from real experiences within our environment becomes more apparent. The generality of virtual interactions without physicality has led to a diminished understanding of the true essence of things. This disconnect serves as the focal point of the film, with an intention to challenge conventional beliefs about the movement of garments and to evoke a sense of awe through visual storytelling.

By manipulating the laws of physics and toying with our senses, the film pushes boundaries and questions the traditional norms of how clothing should behave. The captivating visual narrative created within the film aims to prompt viewers to reconsider their preconceived notions about the tactile nature of the world around them. The exhibition of the film within a panoramic box further enhances this immersive experience, providing a novel space for audiences to engage with the digital fashion world.

Noor and Sterre grow up in a small farming village where life rushes past them. Over the years, they form a close bond that hovers between friendship and love. They spend their days together on the couch in the woods where they have strange conversations, play in the fields, or mock the farmers and cows. They live in their own created reality where butterflies and cows seem to be the center. Their bubble seems airtight, and any form of individual identity seems to have disappeared. The farmers in the fields can only watch as bystanders like the cows on the field. The intimate bond seems almost too perfect. But as it becomes increasingly clear that their dreams don’t allign, we see a toxic side based on unconscious manipulation and control. Noor and Sterre have convinced each other that they cannot exist without one another. Breaking the friendship is a matter of life and death, but what if that is the only solution?

The second film by Berit and Anaïs traps the viewer in the bubble and complex reality of Noor and Sterre. The viewer is challenged to maintain their critical perspective on the intimate friendship. They ask us what reality is and what it is not, and explore the boundaries of friendship and why being one with another can be a nightmare.

Radio Solace is a personal documentation of a radio pirate, played by Remco Ardui (director). Throughout the film we follow this character through his thought process behind making a radio transmission. The day before, the night and the morning of the transmission are the 3 timelines intertwined through his chaotic mind. He looks for a feeling of solace in combining urban exploring with the radio transmission. The presence of a zombie satellite, unused, drifting in space stands as a parallel between the forgotten space antenna he visits to record incoming frequencies and the abandoned church in the middle of Brussels which he finds a perfect place to do his transmission.

All The Words We Don't Say

All The Words We Don’t Say is a short experimental fiction film that presents a blurred version of reality, giving viewers the freedom to interpret the situation themselves. The film follows a young man and woman spending an evening together in a car, driving deeper into the night. Their relationship remains abstract and open to interpretation, while the outside world dynamically passes by during their silent journey. Throughout their ride, the characters exchange no words. The situation becomes clearer through subtle gestures and body language, creating a story without words. Subtitles appear sporadically, linked by the theme of "honesty," inviting viewers to their own interpretation. Muted tones and a monochrome palette enhance the introspective feelings, while the transition from twilight to night symbolizes the characters' inner journey. Atmospheric and melancholic music amplifies the tense atmosphere and adds depth to the visual experience, supporting the film's emotional resonance. All elements of All The Words We Don’t Say, such as subtle gestures, subtitles, music, and lighting, work both separately and together. These disparate elements weave into a coherent narrative. The meaningful silence, without dialogue, emphasizes body language and ambient sounds like the hum of the engine, the rustling wind, and the sound of rain, contributing to the narrative structure and experience. All The Words We Don’t Say explores the complexity of human relationships and emotions in a subtle and profound manner.

A Shameful Waste of Madness

(The smallest drop)

Anna, a young woman of 24, goes to the beach after making the decision to leave her unstable and toxic home. Her mother, Marleen, suffers from an alcohol problem and has a manipulative personality. Anna has broken all contact after leaving her home. However, she has a hard time letting go of the situation and writes a letter to her mother. When she is at the beach, she is reflecting her letter and the decision she made. At the end of her letter, she has made amends with her decision.

The film is made of four parts. The first part is Anna at the beach. The second part consists of flashbacks, showcasing the household Anna has left. They visualize the duality of the relationship between mother and daughter. Both the positive and negative parts of the situation are shown. The third part are images of the sea. The sea acts as a metaphor showing Anna’s emotional state. The last part is a voice-over that reads the letter Anna has written. This voice-over acts as the glue of the film binding the different parts. These four parts combined make an experimental visualization of leaving a toxic household and the different emotions that come with it.

Threads of Time

In a small village in Morocco, Ahmed prepares for his last day before leaving for Europe as a guest worker. The film follows Ahmed's silent odyssey through his familiar surroundings, saying goodbye to simple rural life. Ahmed visits his best friend Karim on the worn-out football field where they spent their childhood, together they reminisce about their carefree days.

He visits Moroccan nature for the last time. He picks a rare flower among the olive trees, a symbolic attempt to preserve the beauty of his homeland. In a moving scene he calls his future workplace in Belgium, but due to the language barrier he does not get far.

He visits Ali's shop. They exchange a final conversation, a farewell that weighs heavily on his heart. The day ends with Ahmed looking out over the city from a rooftop terrace, the future uncertain, but determined to make something of himself, whatever the cost.

The Remaining Scent of a Daybreak Dream

After returning from a rave, Maïra and her friends seek solace in each other’s company, spending the following nights together in a haze of lethargy. We encounter them in the bedroom, a space where vulnerability is embraced and thoughts are laid bare, no matter how dark.

Letting go of the past is an integral part of growing up, often causing us to enter a state of melancholy. Yearning for genuine connection while navigating through a cold world, where we often find ourselves feeling isolated, is something many people dream of and some are lucky to experience-if they allow it. Who will protect you and stay with you until the end of time? What will we remember? These questions linger as the characters navigate their emotional landscape. There may not always be a light at the end of the tunnel, but there can be small fractions of it throughout the journey, no matter how fleeting.

Wozu Dichter?

Annemie has retired and spends her days sleeping and reading poetry. She lives alone in a big house full of memories, a cat and seas of time. You can hear her dreams and experience how her time passes. The film is an investigation into the nature of subjectivity and time. It affirms the impossibility to unite with another persons inner life yet attempts to be intimate with it. The logic of the film is poetic and subjective rather than narrative. You glimpse fragments of her days and move elliptically from moment to dream and back. As such, the film becomes itself a poetic expression of Annemie's being in time. A philosophical yet intimate meditation on poetry, dreams and dwelling.

Nested Sequence - in search of memories.

This experimental essay film is about memories and trying to piece together faded narratives, lost loved ones and forgotten locations. It's a quest into the maker's mind but also an exploration of the digital universe and the Internet. The film pushes the limits of editing, sound, abstraction and AI.

In a digital world like today, full of innovative technologies such as artificial intelligence and editing software, the film questions how we can capture memories. Will we ever be able to digitally match our mind in remembering all the nuances in which the brain gives context to images?

The viewer is immersed in a world of digital screen recordings and abstract 3D scans combined with a collection of nostalgic childhood photographs and sounds. These audiovisual elements try to find a balance between alienation and familiarity. Throughout the film there is a clear distinction between the digital world and the “real” physical world. However, these two worlds undeniably communicate with each other and sometimes merge into bizarre, surreal places.

Using a variety of different tools, the maker aims to create a poetic universe that confronts the viewer with their own expectations, feelings, desires and memories. Simultaneously, the film attempts to make the viewer feel how it is to barely grasp something that seems to unfold right in front of their eyes.

Au Bout des Lèvres
(At the tip of the lips)

Au Bout des Lèvres is a surreal and metaphysical film that follows Vincent, a man trapped in a mental prison, guided by a mysterious voice. This voice, which Vincent perceives as that of a director, fluctuates between encouragement and anger, creating an enigmatic atmosphere that blurs the line between reality and illusion.

The film delves into themes of self-criticism and the relentless pressure we place on ourselves. It questions the origins of our inner voices and how they shape our perception of reality. Vincent's journey is a poignant exploration of the human condition, emphasizing the duality of internal and external pressures.

Au Bout des Lèvres is a thought-provoking film that defies conventional storytelling. It offers a deep reflection on self-perception, the impact of internal and external pressures, and the blurred boundaries between dream and reality, making it a compelling cinematic experience.

Une lettre à Liam
(A letter to Liam)

“I started walking around at 5 am in the empty streets of Tokyo. I thought I would find inspiration for our new film, but I think I was looking for something else. I began to think that our film would only work if I had a final destination, a last shot.

One morning I found myself in a temple near Otsuka, in the district of Toshima, and suddenly I thought I had found what I was looking for. An obsession was born in me. My final destination had to be Mount Fuji. I had to capture the mountain in the early morning, near Yamanaka Lake.”

Une lettre à Liam is a poetic love letter that retraces the road of Niko Wei from Brussels to Tokyo passing by Mount Fuji in research of a specific image: one that represents his love toward his little brother.

The work has, in the process, became an art installation that consists of an 8 minutes video projected in a loop, accompanied by an apart 9 minutes audio tape through headphones.

the creek that runs through my village

The creek that runs through my village is an animated film that delves into the emotional journey of a young man forced to return to his hometown. He finds himself estranged from his father, their relationship nonexistent. As he stands by a window one night, a childhood memory is triggered by a cat, prompting an impulsive journey through the quiet lanes of his past.

The film blends animation styles, with the present depicted in 3D and the memories unfolding in 2D. As he wanders through the night, more memories surface in vibrant 2D, each step rekindling fragments of his earlier life. The familiar sights and sounds of his village evoke a deep sense of nostalgia, gradually breaking down the emotional barriers he has built over the years. Through these memories, he begins to confront the reasons behind his estrangement and his own unresolved feelings.

Verdronken Land
(Drowned Land)

A first seemingly serene and natural landscape is suddenly disrupted by harsh sounding bulldozers. Heavy-duty trucks move masses of sand and are trying to tame the surrounding sea. The film slowly glides onto the water and follows a group of fishermen at work. Despite the hard work, the fish catches are disappointing and the question, “how long can this go on?” arises.

In the second part of the documentary, as the sea recedes, the landscape has changed almost beyond recognition. On the long wet plains, we see a man wearing a yellow coat. He works focused: exploring, mapping and digging. Through the reclaimed pots that he finds in the sand and through a nascent drawing, the viewer gradually finds out what was once on these empty plains.

Both stories, in their own way, symbolize a bygone traditional world and thus stand in stark contrast to the modernity that surrounds them.

Ik wil jouw lichaam koud
(I want your body cold)

An installation of love, lust, and shame. I care for you so much that I can't be close enough. I keep searching, keep longing, your skin on mine. That love is so pure, but also so perverse, naked bodies and the desire for taboos. Minutes or hours of complete surrender to each other. A hard push as pure intense intimacy. A fear for who I am and what I want. Being scared of my own lust. Do I feel ashamed of this film? Of this subject? How much shame do I allow myself, and how much do others allow me? How perverse can I go? Fingering fruit, showing genitals, shower curtains and cloths that we dress in. They fall away, and it’s something more than complete nakedness. How much do people need to relate to it? Does it need to be relatable, or can it just be a sensory experience to immerse in? Can pure hate be pure love? I feel so detained within what I allow myself to feel. Shame as a prison, lust as an insatiable hunger, love as that what is unattainable.

Sensia

Sensia is an exercise on preserving culture and family history. The film is partly shot on the island, Curaçao, where both my parents and their families are from. Both families are currently undergoing their own phase of grieving around the matriarch of the families, my dear Oma & Abuelita. Sensia records meetings and conversations of these families in a film that plays with the absent presence of both grandmothers. Interwoven throughout these moments is the story of the Matriarch. Based on my own interactions with Oma & Abuelita and other women in my environment. She explores her own relationship with and retains her history, culture and the spirits of her ancestors.

Sensia literally means is 'incense'. At the same time, it is also the name for our annual ritual to ring in the new year, welcome good spirits, send away the bad and cleanse the house.

The teacher brings the students to the beach to learn about sea defences, clay and long shore drift. The clay cliffs crumble away every year. Lenny and Jack play with rocks near the beach. Charles takes care of the sheep on his family’s farm. Every year they move the fence back a few meters where the cliffs dissapeared. The sea is always present.
