‘De eerste man, de laatste man en alles wat er tussen kwam’

Over het project:

Wat betekent het om een man te zijn? Is mannelijkheid een abstract begrip? Hoe staat de man in onze huidige maatschappij?

‘De eerste man, de laatste man en alles wat ertussen kwam’, is een project dat ontstond uit een handvol soortgelijke vragen. Het leven van de man wordt van geboorte tot dood in beeld gebracht en de lezer wordt uitgenodigd om een eigen interpretatie te projecteren op deze levensloop. Uitgaande van observaties, persoonlijke ervaringen en de wereld om me heen tracht ik een aantal interessante, bizarre of tragikomische situaties uit te vergroten. Mijn doel is om samen met de lezer op zoek te gaan naar antwoorden.

Naast het begrip ‘mannelijkheid’ probeer ik in dit boek ook het narratief binnen het beeldverhaal aan de orde te stellen. Wat is een boek? Hoe brengt men een verhaal in beeld? Wat is de rol van de lezer in een narratief? Dit project is een open dialoog en denkoefening.

Over Thomas Janssens

Thomas Janssens (2000), is een illustrator en beeldende kunstenaar die na zijn masteropleiding ‘Beeldverhaal’ aan LUCA School of Arts zijn professionele carrière inzet. Uit zijn opleiding ontstonden reeds twee boeken: ‘Vonk’(2021) en ‘De eerste man, de laatste man en alles wat er tussen kwam’(2022). Belangrijke pijlers in het werk van Thomas zijn abstractie, interpretatie en ietwat droge komische insteek. Door het aftasten van de lijn tussen het abstracte en het figuratieve probeert hij de toeschouwer te betrekken in de betekenis van zijn vertellingen.

'On My Way Home'

About the project

On My Way Home is about the theme of nostalgia and the challenge of starting a new life in an unfamiliar place far from home.  

The story is set in a park, where a young woman often walks to collect her thoughts and immerse herself in nature. This place gives her solace, but at the same time makes her aware of what she has left behind. 

It is the sight of the exotic parakeets living in the park that makes her realize that adapting to this new home might be possible for her, too.

The narration follows two paths: on the one hand, there is the description of what she sees during her walks, and on the other the emotions she feels. These two aspects are inextricably linked and influence each other throughout the book. 

About Elena Molinari

Elena Molinari is an Italian-American illustrator and graphic designer.

After graduating in Graphic Design & Art Direction at Naba University in Milan, she worked in the field of advertising and graphic design. 

In 2021 after following a specialisation course at CFP Bauer in Milan, she decided to devote herself to illustration. This choice led her to move to Brussels in September 2021 to pursue a Master in Graphic Storytelling at Luca School of Arts. 

Through this experience she was able to create her first illustrated book "On My Way Home".
