Insurance information for students and outgoing interns from LUCA
LUCA is for the students insured under the policies of the KU Leuven Association. All information about these policies can be found on the KULeuven association network: https://admin.kuleuven.be/sab/vz/en/index
As a student or intern you are also individually insured for certain claims or physical accidents. You should always report this to the authorized LUCA contact person:

How am I insured in the event of a physical accident?
As a student:
We talk about a student accident when a student enrolled at LUCA has a physical accident during an activity related to college life.
More information about what to do specifically in the event of a student accident:
https://admin.kuleuven.be/sab/vz/en/student-accidents
As an intern:
A physical accident that happens to you as an unpaid intern during an internship activity as part of your training (mandatory study internship) or during a voluntary study internship is not considered a student accident but a workplace accident.
In this case, you follow the reporting procedure for workplace accidents that also applies to staff members (including student workers) and registered volunteers.
To report a workplace accident at the internship site or on the way to and from the internship site, you have to fill in different forms than for a ‘common’ student accident.
- Accident report form (in Dutch): to be filled in by you: aangifteformulier
- Medical certificate (in Dutch): to be filled in by the treating doctor or hospital: geneeskundig getuigschrift
You can also find this information via the student accident insurance page:
https://admin.kuleuven.be/sab/vz/en/student-accidents#section-2
(see box ‘Attention:’)
Exception: In the event of an accident during an observation internship, the procedure for student accidents must be followed.
What is civil liability (BA) and how am I insured?
As a student:
If you, as a student, make a mistake, are careless or negligent during a university-related activity and thereby cause damage to a third party, you are in principle civilly liable for this. The civil liability of students is insured by the university's collective civil liability insurance.
However, if you as a student have your own BA insurance (a family insurance or the individual BA-private life policy taken out through LUCA), this always takes priority over the collective BA policy of the college. If necessary, the contact person at the university will have to refer you to your own insurance if you become aware of a claim that you caused during lessons or study activities (not during an internship).
The contact person at the university also always informs the insurance department whether the student has his or her own insurance.
In the absence of your own policy, the collective ABA policy of the university of applied sciences intervenes.
What does the individual policy BA private life entail for students?
This policy insures you for your liability during college and private life.
You can take out this policy via the registration of your (re)enrolment by checking this option. For this, you pay an annual premium of
€ 10.00 the first time or € 5.00 for each subsequent enrolment.
If you have not ticked this option, you can apply for it afterwards via the student accounts: studentenboekhouding@luca-arts.be.

As an intern:
If you make a mistake, are careless or negligent during an internship activity (compulsory or voluntary student internship) and cause damage to a third party as a result, it is not you but your internship provider who is civilly liable for this. Civil liability in these cases is covered by the civil liability insurance of the internship provider's company or organisation.

As a student, how am I insured against damage or accidents during a trip abroad?
Here we must first and foremost make a distinction between travel at the initiative of the student and at the initiative of the college/course:
- For trips initiated by the course itself in which students must participate: you are covered by LUCA's travel assistance insurance.
More about this: https://admin.kuleuven.be/sab/vz/en/internships-and-insurance
- Travel at the student's initiative, but supported/approved by the program; As a student, you take action to go abroad as part of your studies: an Erasmus study period, an internship abroad, a thesis research, etc. You can optionally join LUCA's travel assistance policy for the period of your stay .
More about this: https://admin.kuleuven.be/sab/vz/en/internships-and-insurance
- Travel on the student's initiative, without approval from the program or as a private initiative of the student himself: no coverage by LUCA's travel assistance insurance.
