When should a student report their absence?
At LUCA School of Arts, there are no course components with mandatory attendance. However, there are (practical) courses with continuous assessment where participation in class is important, so it’s best to attend as much as possible. We ask students to report any absence during class weeks or exams.
You can report your absence to the lecturer via the form (absence without a certificate, without consequences). In this case, your lecturers are simply informed that you won’t be present.
You can also report your absence via the form, submit a certificate, and be officially excused.
What is the difference between an excused absence (with certificate) and an unexcused absence (without certificate)?
-
In the case of an excused absence:
- You have the opportunity to consult with your lecturer on how to catch up on missed work.
- You can schedule a make-up exam through the ombudsperson.
- You can request a refund of learning credit due to illness through the care coach.
To be officially excused, you must submit a certificate, such as a doctor’s note.
-
You are absent without a certificate if you miss class (e.g., due to a strike) or if you choose not to attend. In that case, it’s your own responsibility to stay up to date with the course content and assignments.
Which certificates/proofs do we accept?
- In case of illness: a doctor’s certificate
- In case of the death of a close family member: a death notice or certificate. This justifies absence from the day of death up to and including the day of the funeral.
- Notifications related to a special status:
- Notification of a competition as a top athlete
- Notification of an activity or competition as a high-level artist
- Notification of a work-related activity – applicable to working students / student entrepreneurs
- Notification because you are a caregiver
Other proofs or certificates may also be accepted.
Within what timeframe must you report your absence?
Within three working days after the start of the absence.
