The department of percussion and marimba developed into a passionate section in which versatility and specialisation, tradition and innovation, interdisciplinarity and top musicianship go hand in hand. The marimba ensemble is part of the programme where students are guided in both representative classical and contemporary repertoire and are also encouraged to create their own arrangements and compositions.
The LUCA percussion and marimba ensemble's collaboration this year is under the direction of Dr Ludwig Albert. He is always looking for new musical challenges and combinations. Apart from works by Steve Reich and Rodrigo Y Gabriela, the programme also includes own works such as the dynamic, successful works ‘Sound of Japanese Drumming and the double concerto “Permafrost”, a co-composition with former student Rodrigo Marques (PT), who is also one of the guest soloists, together with Augusto Bao (CN). Both soloists are First Prize winners of the prestigious Universal Marimba Competition. Both compositions and soloists exemplify Albert's uniquely lauded marimba style and lyrical sound production with a combination of creative power and sensitive virtuosity.
The programme takes the audience on a musical world tour and is a penetrating experience where ‘East and West’ merge in perfect harmony. A stage filled with percussion and concert marimbas, unforgettable melodies, waves of drum violence and beautiful marimba sounds, in short "Percussive Sounds of Wood ’.
