LUCA School of Arts campus Genk / C-mine
From Tuesday, January 28 to Thursday, January 30, LUCA School of Arts, in collaboration with VAKlab, is hosting a unique Product Design Masterclass with Johanna Seelemann. Together with product design master’s students and other designers, this masterclass explores the meaning of craftsmanship in an industrial society.
Using the steel industry in Genk as a case study, we’ll ask: Can the knowledge and work of steel producers still be considered “craft”? What chain of actions is set in motion from design to execution? During this masterclass, we will analyze the past of the steel industry and transform these insights into possible futures.
In addition to inspiring sessions on campus, we will visit two renowned steel companies in Genk: Aperam, a stainless steel producer, and Provan, an innovative metalworking company. These site visits offer valuable insights that enrich the dialogues and conceptual research during the masterclass.
Johanna Seelemann, a renowned designer and researcher, will guide this masterclass. Her work focuses on the intersection of design, materials, and the social and ecological implications of industrial processes.
The masterclass is conducted in English and is tailored to designers and students with a background in product design or related disciplines. The focus is on dialogue and research, rather than hands-on making.
