Stop/Start Motion: Expanded Animation in Contemporary Art

Exhibition

The exposition Stop/Start Motion: Expanded Animation in Contemporary Art places the works of four artists who make the crossover from animation towards fine arts and interactive art, in a dialogue with one another.

Alexandra Crouwers (Intermedia) creates a hybrid (physical – digital) immersive space, where the spectator is submerged in two seamless, single-shot loop animations. This work arises from the clearcut that is called ‘The Plot’, as part of her Ph.D. research at LUCA, which voices her eco-anxiety.

Kaja Renkas and Iwona Pom use AR, cut-up animation and spatial design to breathe new life into graphic art and illustration. They present a series of posters, in their characteristic collage style, that are digitally augmented in the form of loop animations.

Marieke Verbiesen explores, with her Mayhem Machine, the use of alternative interfaces to control animated images. Her work is an invitation to rethink the boundaries of animation and game, beyond the traditional screen, mouse and controller.
